Happy Day Before Christmas, everybody! As I write this, it's Christmas Eve, "Rudolph and Frosty's Christmas in July" is playing on TV right now, and we'll be heading off to visit our relatives and exchange gifts in a few hours, so I might as well write up a new journal entry for the day.
I've spent the past month watching many Christmas cartoons and films; in fact, I've watched at least one every day this month, so you might say I've been having my own "25 Days of Christmas". Naturally, I managed to add a few new specials to the repertoire that I was watching (or revisited them in some cases), so I figure I might as well make mention of them here, as I did in 2004, 5, and 6. And since I didn't write something like this last year, I'll make mention of those as well. But since I probably don't have time to write up lengthy descriptions of each one or maybe don't feel like writing them, I'll just write short little comments for each one.
2007*
"Frosty's Winter Wonderland" - The original sequel to "Frosty", which has a case of recycled jokes and introduces the eponymous snowman's wife, was seen by me on ABC Family last year and on YouTube this year. I'd buy the DVD of this if I wasn't certain Warner Bros. is probably gonna release a deluxe edition in the future.
*
"Rudolph and Frosty's Christmas in July" - I woke up early and caught this on ABC Family on Christmas Eve last year and decided to watch it. And I kind of enjoyed it. Continuity freaks will like the references made to earlier specials, like the appearance of the whale from "Rudolph's Shiny New Year".
*
Freakazoid!: "In Arms Way" - When I saw this on In2TV with Spanish audio in 2006, I knew I'd have to check it out in English. So I downloaded a video file of it the following year. I deleted said video file afterwards 'cause I knew I'd have it on DVD soon.
*
Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: "Holiday Time" - In spite of the oddity of the fact that the characters never call the holiday by name despite how obvious it is that they're talking about Christmas, I still enjoy this simply for the scene where Zurg steals Buzz's morning newspaper.
*
Timon & Pumbaa: "Don't Be Elfish" - I don't really know what to type here. I just kinda liked seeing "The Lion King"'s wisecracking duo playing mall Santa and helper so they can get the Disneyverse equivalent to the Nintendo 64.
2008*
"The Berenstain Bears' Christmas Tree" - Although this is now on DVD, it wasn't available at any of my local video rental stores, so I had to watch a poor-quality VHS rip on YouTube. Ah well. Still, as someone who was raised on the books, I enjoyed seeing a Christmas story with Stan & Jan Berenstain's ursine nuclear family in animated form. I still like the "Meet Santa Bear" story book better, though.
*
Scooby-Doo: "The Nutcracker Scoob" - I've never been much of a "Scooby-Doo" fan, but this Christmas, I thought I'd toss the dog a
bone Scooby snack and watch his original Christmas cartoon, since I had it on a tape recorded off of Cartoon Network in 2000.
*
Rugrats: "The Santa Experience" - Although I ranked this in my
Top 50 Christmas Cartoons, I've never really had a copy of this special of my own. Which is why I taped it off of Nicktoons Network when they aired it this year.
*
"A Goof Troop Christmas: Have Yourself a Goofy Little Christmas" - The source of the quote in this journal's header, I taped this when Toon Disney aired it this past Saturday, for I knew it would probably be the last time it'll ever air.
*
The Sylvester & Tweety Mysteries: "It Happened One Night Before Christmas" - The recent DVD release of this show's first season gave me a new special to watch for Christmas. Featured here is Granny's rarely-seen brother, who happens to be Hubie and Bertie's owner, and a rare instance of Sylvester, Tweety, and Hector working together.
*
The New Batman Adventures: "Holiday Knights" - The last two Christmases, I watched the first "Batman" Christmas episode, "Christmas with the Joker". This year, I decided to watch the second one as well. And I instantly recognized much of the animation from seeing them in the Kids' WB! promos.
*
Chowder: "Hey Hey, It's Knishmas!" - My friend ~
seconteen13 recommended I should see this, so I caught it as soon as the next time Cartoon Network aired it. And yes, I liked it. Thanks, Seconteen.
Of course, I didn't just limit myself to watching Christmas specials, decorating trees, and making many contributions to the
Christmas Specials Wiki. The other night, my mom and me made some Christmas cookies like we did last year, and yesterday, I fixed up a gingerbread tree all by myself. And naturally, I've also been reading Christmas storybooks and Christmas-themed stories in my comic book collection, even Christmas strips printed in the strip collection books I've got of "Garfield", "Calvin and Hobbes", "U.S. Acres", and "FoxTrot". So yes, I pretty much have been having my own personal "25 Days of Christmas" in this room of mine. This is about all I can think of typing for now, so Merry Christmas, everyone, and again may I say, be careful of all icy patches!
